Stik™ Blog

"It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself, and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influence may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn."

- GEORGE WASHINGTON (Letter to the Legislature of Pennsylvania, September 5, 1789)

ENTRY #1 - March 29, 2009 by Brian

Well, I should probably start with guess you should know that Solar Stik™, Inc. is NOT what I had planned for my life... Ten years ago, I had a much different direction in mind than to where events have ultimately steered me.

Solar Stik™ is by NO means a company that is steered by one individual. It is filled with independent-minded people who share a vision for the Solar Stik™ System. Years ago I was fortunate enough to be a part of the founding of this company, but since then, excellent and talented people have coalesced into the ranks, helping to manifest a direction for the company. I am honored to work with them in this organization...

...so just how did all of this craziness get started?

Part of the answer can be found by reading The Story of the Stik™.

As for my part, I am a Sailor to my core, and this idea, Solar Stik™, is a direct derivative of the the reasons that I and others dare to sail... Cruising in our sailboat provides me and my Bride with something that I can only experience on the open ocean or in a tiny anchorage by a deserted island...... Freedom.

Let me elaborate a bit:

"Risk & Reward" - When I am cruising on my sailboat, I can go places that only a boat can take you. Far-away places where few people dare to roam... you see, 2/3 of the Earth's surface is covered by water, and the rest... well... is "well-developed". I believe the ocean is truly the "last frontier" on this wonderful planet, and it is truly one of the last places where your skills, spirituality, and endurance are truly tested to their limits (...and sometimes beyond!)

On the ocean, there is no "911" to call if something goes wrong, there are no "seatbelt laws" to keep you safe, in fact there really isn't much of anything except you, your vessel, and nature.

Sailing is a personal test as well as an exercise in seamanship every single time you throw the docklines and break free from the security of land.

To that end, a competent sailor makes sure that his vessel has the best tools & gear serving vital functions aboard. A well-outfitted vessel can function independently and "self-sustain" for long periods of time in austere or remote environments. ...the "best gear" on my personal vessel includes multiple power sources, with a Solar Stik™ being the primary power generator.

It's often difficult to get fuel or provisions in some of the areas where I choose to roam, just like it was probably difficult for the original pioneers of the American West to get supplies to their homestead. It often requires a multi-day trek to an island outpost or town.

The Solar Stik™ provides my my sailing vessel with independent, self-sustaining operation, a very important function... but most importantly, it provides me with the Freedom that I love so dearly. FREEDOM is the reason that I am so personally invested in this business...

It often strikes me that we are not just manufacturing & selling a product, but also a philosophy. It gives me great "peace of mind" to know that every single unit sold is going to a person seeking "independence" in some form, be it on their boat, or on a hillside in Afghanistan.

One last thing... other than right here, you will not find the word "green" on this website. I, for one, do not believe that anyone should buy a product based on wether or not it is "green". We have been developing the Solar Stik™ System for over ten years to date. The entire premise for its existence is rooted in sound technology and proper application. It is a BENEFIT to the user that it is a "green" product, but not our belief that "green" should be the primary focus of its application to the marketplace. It is an independent technology that, when utilized in the proper application, serves as a "high-value tool" and provides a significant "return on investment" to the user.

Sorry for being so long-winded... my fingers are going to hurt in the morning from all this typing!

...more next week!

This is very disturbing... I just read a report on how our electricity grid is at risk due to terrorism, EMP, hackers, etc..

Ever feel like you're living in an alternate dimension? This kind of stuff just didn't happen when I was kid!

TEA PARTY!!!

Since the National Park Service here in St. Augustine doesn't allow gas generators on the grounds, we were asked to provide the power for a "free speech" event... turns out it was the Tax-day Tea Party!

Hurricane Season officially starts tomorrow... and living here in FL, I guess I have grown accustomed to the hype surrounding it.

As a transplant from Virginia many years ago, I've survived a few.  There was Hurricane "Georges" that blew through Key West in 1998, destroying much of the lower Keys. I was building my boat at the time and almost lost it to the storm (that, in itself is a story!).  It was the first time I had experienced the full fury of a hurricane.

In 2004, we had 5 storms hit the state in one season... but by then, I had become numb to the "drama" that came with them.  The Media does a fair job in reporting the events, but there is stark difference between the "preparation advice" you get from them and the wisdom that comes with experience.  My wife and I learn something with every one that we deal with.

In a weird way, living in a Hurricane Stike Zone has taught us to live in a prepared state... not a bad thing when you consider all of the global events unfolding.  There are many great resources out there to help you prepare for things like H1N1 (Swine Flu), storms, terrorism, etc.  We're not "survivalists", but rather, have a deep respect for the old proverb:

"He who fails to prepare, prepares to fail."

Check out our "Preparedness" section on the website...

"Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool lays open his folly."
